The picture shows American troops moving forward in Oran, a port city on Algeria's Mediterranean coast, in November 1942, just over a week after Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa, began on November 8. The U.S. Army Signal Corps made the photograph, and the military photographers of that era documented campaigns like this one for official records and wartime publicity. Oran was a key objective because its harbor and airfields offered a foothold for controlling the Mediterranean and supplying later operations in Tunisia. The image is a useful record of the early phase of the American fight in North Africa, when troops were still pushing inland from the coast.
