The title places this stereograph at a block house in Cienfuegos, a port on Cuba's southern coast, where the last Spanish troops were stationed as the war of 1898 ended. Spain gave up Cuba under the Treaty of Paris that December, and its garrisons withdrew over the following months. New York publisher Strohmeyer & Wyman issued the card around 1899. Because it is a stereograph, two slightly offset photographs were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the soldiers and fortifications a sense of depth.
