Mounted troops of Gen. Máximo Gómez's army are shown at Remedios, a town on Cuba's north-central coast. Gómez, a Dominican-born veteran, commanded Cuban insurgent forces in the independence war against Spain that began in 1895. This stereograph was published in New York around 1899, when American readers were following the Spanish-American War closely. Cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a three-dimensional look at distant events from their own parlors.
