Few pictures on this board show a homecoming quite like this one, which records a formal entry into Havana by Gen. Fitzhugh Lee on January 1, 1899. Lee had fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and later served as U.S. consul general in Havana, so his return came at a charged moment, just after Spain relinquished control of Cuba and American forces took over the city. The card was published in New York by Strohmeyer & Wyman and copyrighted that same year. Its paired images were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave viewers at home a sense of depth and presence in a distant, newly contested place.
