Mario García Menocal, who served as president of Cuba from 1913 to 1921, sits for this full-length studio-style portrait alongside his wife and son. Menocal was a civil engineer and a veteran of the Cuban War of Independence against Spain, and his presidency came in the years when the island's sugar economy was booming during the First World War. Formal portraits like this one were a common way for Latin American leaders of the period to present themselves as dignified, stable family men. The picture also offers a glimpse of early twentieth-century presidential image-making, when photography was becoming central to political identity.
