Shown standing, half-length and facing the camera, General Santiago Vidaurri appears on a carte de visite, a small albumen print on card that was popular in the 1860s for collectors' albums. Vidaurri was a powerful regional leader in northern Mexico, governing Nuevo León and Coahuila and often acting independently of the central government in Mexico City. During the French intervention his political loyalties shifted, and his likeness appears in an album of portraits connected to Emperor Maximilian's reign. He was killed in 1867, the same year the Habsburg empire fell.
