A white boy named Santiago McKinn stands among this group, and the caption singles him out as a captive held in Geronimo's camp. The photograph dates to about 1886, shortly before the Chiricahua Apache leader surrendered to General George Crook in southeastern Arizona on March 27 of that year. Most of the people posed here are children, and the partly built tent behind them suggests an ordinary camp at work. The image was copyrighted by C.S. Fly of Tombstone, a photographer who recorded the Apache bands of the period, and pictures like this helped keep the long Apache campaign in the public eye.
