Taken in Havana on March 11, 1951, this portrait of Ramon Blancos comes from the Carl Van Vechten collection at the Library of Congress. Van Vechten, a novelist and critic who began photographing in the 1930s, built a large body of portraits of writers, performers, and other public figures. The record does not say what Blancos did for a living, but the date places the sitting during Carlos Prío Socarrás's presidency, when Havana was a busy center of political and cultural life. The estate of Van Vechten gave the print to the Library in 1966.
