The Shell room, a storeroom for artillery shells inside Morro Castle, sets this card apart from the fort's gun batteries and harbor views. Morro Castle was built from the late 1500s into the early 1600s to guard the entrance to Havana harbor against pirates and rival fleets. By 1903, when this stereograph was copyrighted, Cuba had passed from Spanish rule through U.S. military administration to independence in 1902. The card's two nearly identical photographs were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth.
