Few fortresses in the Americas are as recognizable from a distance as Morro Castle, which sits on a rocky headland at the entrance to Havana Harbor. Begun by the Spanish in 1589 and finished in the early 1600s, it was built to guard the bay against pirates and rival European fleets, and its lighthouse later became a landmark for ships approaching the city. In this far view, the castle's sloping stone walls and open sea approach show how it dominated the harbor mouth in the early years of the Cuban republic. The National Photo Company produced many travel views of sites like this one around 1900 to 1910.
