The Malecón seawall, stretching toward El Morro at the mouth of Havana Harbor, is the focus of this panoramic view made around 1904 by the Detroit Photographic Company. El Morro, a Spanish fort begun in the late 1500s, guarded the harbor entrance against pirates and rival navies, and its lighthouse still marks the approach from the sea. The record also notes a parade or procession on the waterfront, a sign that the seafront was becoming a public promenade as well as a working port. Construction of the Malecón was underway during these years, so the picture shows the city reaching toward the water.
