Muelle Lus, a pier on Havana's harbor front, gives this view its particular focus on the working edge of the city. Made around 1904, a few years after the Spanish-American War, the photograph shows a port where American influence was strong and sugar and tobacco shipments were driving a busy trade. The Detroit Photographic Company, known for its travel views of cities and landscapes, sold images like this to visitors and collectors. Note the ships and wharves, which show how crowded the waterfront had become.
