Few places in Havana tie the waterfront to everyday life as closely as the San Francisco wharf, which sits near the old town where the bay meets the streets around the Convento de San Francisco de Asís. For centuries the harbor was the main gateway for goods moving in and out of the city, including sugar and tobacco bound for Europe and North America. Dockworkers, travelers and vendors gathered where ships tied up, and the nearby plaza reflects the colonial layout that grew up around the port.
