Printed on a long panoramic sheet, this gelatin silver view of Havana's waterfront shows boats along the channel, and the words "La Discusion" on its front may refer to the Havana daily of that name. Harbor scenes like this were especially common in the years before 1921, when Havana was a major port and the young Cuban republic was closely tied to American trade after the Spanish-American War. The channel leading in past the Morro Castle made the harbor a gateway for shipping, and views like this one record a working waterfront during a period of rapid change.
