Colon Park, now known as Parque Colón, sits in Old Havana and takes its name from Christopher Columbus, whose statue stands at its center. This stereograph was issued around 1900 by the International View Co. of Decatur, Illinois, a firm that sold paired photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The card dates from just after the Spanish-American War, when American travelers and the U.S. military were becoming a visible presence in Havana, and such views helped bring distant places like Cuba into American parlors.
