O'Reilly Street is one of the older commercial thoroughfares in Old Havana, running through the colonial core of the city near the Plaza de Armas and the harbor. In photographs from the decades either side of 1900, such streets were busy with shops, merchants, carriages and pedestrians, and the buildings reflect Havana's long Spanish colonial heritage with arcades, balconies and stone facades. The print is undated beyond its range of roughly 1880 to 1930, a period when Havana was growing rapidly as a trading port and when photography was becoming a common tool for documenting city life.
