Looking down O'Reilly Street in Havana, this view captures a narrow colonial thoroughfare whose awnings stretch over the pavement and cut the glare of the Caribbean sun. O'Reilly was among the older streets of the walled city, laid out during Spain's long rule over the island, and by the early 1900s Havana was a busy port with shops, offices and a growing American presence after the Spanish-American War. Photographs like this one, made around 1912, document the dense, shaded street life that visitors and merchants of the period would have known well. The print is held by the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
