This view is set in Havana, where an elevated railway runs through the city's busy commercial district, with the Lonja, the city's produce exchange, in the distance. Elevated tracks like these were built in the early twentieth century to move freight and passengers through crowded streets near the harbor. The Lonja served as a center for merchants and trade, so the picture captures how rail and commerce shaped the city's streets around 1912, a few years after Cuba became an independent republic.
