Santiago de Cuba, on the island's southeastern coast, was one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas, and this stereograph turns its waterfront into a three-dimensional view meant for parlor viewers. The card dates to about 1899, the year the Spanish-American War ended and Spain's hold on Cuba gave way to American occupation, so the scene captures a city in the middle of dramatic political change. The record also tags the image with "Women," suggesting that figures on the street or quay were part of the composition. Stereo cards like this were copyrighted by R.Y. Young for the American Stereoscopic Company and sold in large numbers, which is why they remain such a vivid record of everyday life in the period.
