Thatched roofs crown the modest houses in this 1907 view of a suburb of Santiago de Cuba, a port on the island's southeastern coast. Lucien Wulsin made the photograph, but its details come from an old caption card that has not been independently verified. The year falls during the second United States occupation of Cuba (1906 to 1909), when many outsiders photographed everyday island life. Founded by Spanish colonists in 1514, Santiago was one of Cuba's oldest European settlements, and its outlying neighborhoods show how working households lived beyond the colonial center.
