A market in Santiago de Cuba, the eastern port city, is the subject of this stereograph, which was made around 1898. That was the year of the Spanish-American War, and Santiago became a focus of American attention when U.S. forces fought to take the city that summer. The card was copyrighted by B.L. Singley and issued by the Keystone View Company, a firm that sold stereo views for viewing through a hand-held stereoscope at home. Because the record's details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, the exact date and makers are best treated as provisional.
