A rural road in the Province of Santiago, with a Cuban countryman walking along it, gives this stereograph its particular setting in the island's east. Cards like this were sold in pairs that, seen through a stereoscope, produced a sense of depth. The New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, named on the card, issued stereo views during this period, when American interest in Cuba ran high after the Spanish-American War and during the early years of U.S. occupation. The date and subject tags are unverified, so the card is best read as a general glimpse of rural life around 1899.
