A rural village in Cuba, caught in a late-1890s stereograph, offers a rare glimpse of the countryside just as the island was passing from Spanish rule to American oversight. The card was issued by the American Stereoscopic Company, a firm that sold paired photographs to be viewed through a hand stereoscope, which made scenes like this one appear to stand in three dimensions in the parlor. Cuba drew strong American interest around 1899, after the Spanish-American War, and views of its towns and farms circulated widely in the United States. The record's details are unverified, so the exact location and date should be treated with some caution.
