The caption sets this view apart from the many tomb and monument pictures in the series by focusing on a bone-pit, a place where remains were gathered after graves were reopened. Such charnel pits were a common feature of Havana's cemeteries during the Spanish colonial period, when burial ground was scarce and reused. Keystone View Co. issued this stereograph around 1900, shortly after the Spanish-American War, when Cuba was under American occupation and American viewers were taking a keen interest in the island. Like other stereo cards of the era, it was meant to be viewed through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect.
