Its title sets Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's line "War is Hell" against a claim that peace in Cuba under Spanish rule was worse, a pointed argument for intervention. Grant Hamilton drew this color lithograph for *Judge*, the New York humor weekly, and it ran in the April 30, 1898 issue, days after Congress declared war on Spain. The cartoon reflects the public debate of that spring, when reports of Cuban suffering under Spanish colonial rule and the sinking of the USS *Maine* in Havana harbor pushed many Americans toward war. Looking at it today, the caption offers a useful window into how wartime opinion was shaped through popular illustrated magazines.
