Cienfuegos, a port on Cuba's south coast, is the setting, and the card's title calls it the last Spanish camp on the island. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that issued stereograph views for home viewers, published it around 1899, after the 1898 war had ended Spanish rule in Cuba and Spanish troops were withdrawing. The subject list includes hammocks, which suggests a scene of soldiers resting in camp rather than in battle, a more everyday view of military life than many war pictures offered. Stereo cards like this were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, so the sense of depth was central to their appeal.
