*The Last Stroke* takes its name from a phrase that suggests a decisive final blow, and its title frames the picture as part of a long contest over Cuba's future. Cuban insurgents resisted Spanish colonial rule for decades, beginning with the Ten Years' War in 1868 and renewed in the war that started in 1895. By 1898 the conflict had drawn in the United States, and the Treaty of Paris that year ended Spanish sovereignty over the island. Pictures from this period were often made to shape public opinion about the struggle, so it is worth looking closely at what the artist chose to emphasize.
