The Last Stroke" takes its title from the closing phase of Cuba's struggle for independence, a fight that had run against Spanish colonial rule for decades. The poster belongs to the years of the Cuban War of Independence (1895–1898), when rebel forces and sympathetic Americans pressed for an end to Spanish control. The United States entered the conflict in 1898, and the Treaty of Paris that December ended Spanish sovereignty over the island, though American military occupation followed until 1902. Posters of this kind were meant to rally public opinion, so their imagery and slogans reveal how Americans understood Cuba's cause at the time.
