The Last Stroke" frames the struggle as a single decisive blow, and its subtitle, "a Story of Cuba's Fight for Freedom," places it within the long campaign to end Spanish colonial rule. Cuban insurgents fought Spain in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and again from 1895, and the conflict drew in the United States in 1898. Spain relinquished its claim to Cuba under the Treaty of Paris that year, and the island remained under U.S. military administration until it became independent in 1902. Pictures like this one often reflected the American press's view of the war as a moral crusade.
