*The Last Stroke* takes its name from the idea of a final, decisive blow, and its title points to the long contest over Cuba's future. The struggle began in 1895, when Cuban insurgents rose against Spanish colonial rule. The conflict drew in the United States in 1898, and after the Spanish-American War ended that year, Cuba spent several years under American military administration before becoming an independent republic in 1902. Illustrations from this period often aimed to stir public sympathy for the independence cause, so the work is worth reading as both a record of events and a statement of their time.
