In this cartoon, President William McKinley swats at mosquitoes under the caption "Hit him hard!", with a complaint that the pests are worse in the Philippines than they were in Cuba. The insurgents led by Emilio Aguinaldo are the target of the joke, which casts their resistance to American rule as a nuisance. The cover ran in Judge in February 1899, just after the Treaty of Paris transferred the islands to the United States and fighting broke out around Manila. The Cuba reference recalls the tropical diseases that had hit American troops during the Spanish-American War. Grant Hamilton drew it as a wry comment on the new colonial conflict.
