Castro is shown in New York in September 1960, when he traveled to the United Nations General Assembly as the leader of a Cuba that had come under his control after the 1959 revolution. The visit drew intense attention, and his stay in Harlem, where he lodged at the Hotel Theresa instead of a midtown hotel, became as newsworthy as his time at the Assembly. The print comes from the U.S. News & World Report photograph collection and is one frame from a contact sheet, so it records the press coverage of the trip as much as the diplomatic setting itself.
