Fidel Castro sits holding a rifle while two armed followers stand beside him, a composed scene from the rebel hideout in the Sierra Maestra, the mountain range in Cuba's Oriente Province. Castro and his fighters used these highlands as a base for their guerrilla campaign against the Batista government, which ended with the revolutionary victory in January 1959. The print is credited to photographer Andreé St. George of the Wide World agency. Its date is recorded only as approximately 1960, so it may show the rebels in the mountains or a later restaging, but its caption, "Armed for action," stresses the readiness for combat that made such images newsworthy.
