Laborers laying water pipe in the streets of Santiago de Cuba make an unusual subject for a stereograph of the period, which more often showed monuments and scenic views. The card dates to about 1899, the year Spain's rule over Cuba ended after the Spanish-American War, and American publishers were then eager to show readers the island and its new circumstances. The stereo was copyrighted by R.Y. Young and issued by the American Stereoscopic Company, whose cards were widely sold for home viewing through a stereoscope. Its plain focus on manual work and infrastructure offers a glimpse of everyday urban improvement in a city that was then undergoing major change.
