A death line, the spot where condemned prisoners were lined up before a firing squad, gives this stereograph its title and its grim subject in Santiago de Cuba. The card dates to about 1899, within a year of the Spanish-American War, which ended Spanish control of the island and drew American publishers to produce views of Cuba for a public eager for war news. Griffith & Griffith, whose copyright line appears on the card, sold such scenes through stereoscope parlors and by mail. Many images of this kind were arranged for the camera, so the scene reflects what publishers wanted viewers to believe as much as what took place on the ground.
