Few pictures in this gallery show the landing itself, and this wood engraving records the first troops coming ashore at Daiquiri on Cuba's southeastern coast in June 1898. The image was made from a drawing by William J. Glackens, who was sketching for McClure's Magazine during the Spanish-American War, and it appeared in the magazine's October 1898 issue. The landing was the opening move of the campaign against Santiago de Cuba, where the Spanish fleet was trapped. Glackens's drawing gives a sense of the crowded, makeshift work of getting men and supplies from ship to shore.
