This wood engraving shows the Rough Riders charging up San Juan Hill outside Santiago de Cuba, the moment its caption describes as driving the Spanish from their intrenchments. The assault took place on July 1, 1898, during the American campaign against the Spanish forces defending the city, and the volunteer cavalry regiment, with Theodore Roosevelt among its officers, fought largely on foot. Illustrated weeklies of the period relied on wood engravings like this one to bring distant battles to readers, so the scene reflects both the fighting and the wartime press that shaped how Americans saw it.
