Few views from the 1898 war carry the name of San Juan Hill as directly as this stereograph, which shows men in trenches cut into the ground near Santiago de Cuba. The U.S. Army assaulted the hill on July 1, 1898, and the fighting, in which Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders took part, became one of the best-known episodes of the Spanish-American War. The card was copyrighted by M.H. Zahner and published by Griffith & Griffith around 1899, when stereoscopic views like this were sold to American households so people could see distant battlefields in three dimensions. Because the caption information is old and unverified, the exact location and date should be treated as approximate.
