This color poster advertises the October 1898 issue of *Scribner's Magazine*, promoting Richard Harding Davis's account of the battle of San Juan Hill, with artwork signed by Christy. The fighting took place on July 1, 1898, near Santiago de Cuba, during the Spanish-American War, when U.S. infantry and cavalry, including Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, assaulted Spanish positions on the hills outside the city. Davis, one of the most widely read correspondents of the day, was on the scene, and his reporting helped shape how Americans came to see the war and its heroes. The poster shows how magazines used dramatic battle imagery to sell issues at the height of public interest in Cuba.
