American soldiers' graves on the slopes near San Juan Hill, outside Santiago de Cuba, are the focus of this stereograph, a sober reminder of what the fighting cost. United States forces attacked Spanish positions there on July 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, and the hill became one of that conflict's best-known engagements. The card was published around 1899 by M.H. Zahner of Niagara Falls, New York, at a time when stereoscopic views let Americans see distant places through a viewer that gave the scene depth. Its paired images show the burial ground about a year after the battle.
