The church pictured is San Francisco de Asís in Old Havana, the Franciscan convent and church that stands on the Plaza de San Francisco near the city's harbor. The Franciscans established their house there in the early 1600s, and the complex became one of the most recognizable landmarks of the old colonial port. This photomechanical print, made around 1918, was deposited for U.S. copyright, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress. It shows the church's exterior at a time when Havana was growing quickly and when many American visitors and publishers were circulating images of Cuban city life.
