The building pictured is Havana's National theater, a grand Beaux-Arts house that opened in the mid-1910s on the edge of the city's Parque Central, when Cuba was a young republic eager to show its capital as a modern cultural center. Its designer, the Belgian-born architect Paul Belau, drew on European opera houses for its monumental columns and sculpted facade. The theater quickly became a venue for opera, zarzuela and touring companies, and it remains one of the most recognizable buildings on the Paseo del Prado. This 1918 photomechanical print records its exterior while the building was still new to the city.
