The building in this view is the Capitolio Nacional, the domed seat of Cuba's congress, which rose on Havana's Paseo del Prado in the late 1920s and opened in 1929. Its architecture deliberately echoes the United States Capitol in Washington, a reflection of the republic's close ties to American political and architectural models. Photographs from the mid-1930s through the 1940s, the period this print likely dates to, show the building as a symbol of national government at a time when Havana was growing into a major Caribbean city.
