Few buildings in Havana announce a capital city as plainly as the domed structure in this photogravure, titled the new Capitol. Cuba's Capitolio Nacional stands at the head of the Paseo del Prado, and its white dome and columns were modeled on the United States Capitol in Washington, a nod to the close political and commercial ties between the two countries. The building was not completed until 1929, so the c1918 date in the record more likely reflects when the project was planned or first pictured, which is worth keeping in mind when reading this print.
