The Castillo de la Fuerza is the oldest standing stone fort in the Western Hemisphere, built in the 1550s on the western edge of Havana harbor to guard the city against raids by European rivals. This c1918 photomechanical print, held by the Library of Congress, shows the fort as it looked in the early twentieth century, when Havana was being remade as a modern capital and its colonial landmarks drew the attention of tourists and photographers. The copyright notation on the record points to the print's publication as a mass-produced image, a common way for views of Cuban sites to reach American readers at the time.
