This photomechanical print shows La Cabaña, the fortress that guards the eastern side of the entrance to Havana Harbor, with a ship at the right edge of the frame. Spain began building the fort in the 1760s after Britain briefly seized Havana in 1762, and it was finished in the 1770s as one of the largest colonial fortresses in the Americas. By around 1918, when this image was made, the site had become a military installation of the Cuban republic. The print was registered for copyright, which is why it carries a U.S. Copyright Office number and helps document how the harbor defenses looked in the early twentieth century.
