From the ramparts of Cabana Fortress, this view looks across Havana's harbor and the city beyond it. Spain began building the Cabaña on the eastern side of the harbor entrance in 1763, after Britain briefly held Havana the year before, and it served as a military garrison into the period when this picture was made. The print belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by a travel writer who documented distant places for American audiences, so it offers a useful record of the city from the late 1800s into the early 1920s.
