The sweep of this panorama takes in Havana's waterfront at the mouth of its natural harbor, a site that shaped the city's growth for centuries. The picture dates to about 1904, a few years after the Spanish-American War ended Spanish colonial rule and as the Republic of Cuba was taking shape in the capital. Panoramic views like this were popular with travelers and publishers, who used them to show off skylines, fortifications and shipping. The record does not name the photographer, so the image is best read as a document of how the city looked in its early republican years.
