Vivado was a residential district on the western edge of Havana, and this view looks down one of its ordinary streets around 1904, a few years after the United States occupation of Cuba ended in 1902. Vivado grew up in the early twentieth century as the city pushed outward, and the scene shows the low houses, unpaved or rough roadway, and everyday street life of a neighborhood then on Havana's fringe. Photographs like this one were often made for travel and trade views, so they capture how a working suburb looked to outside eyes at the time.
