Few views of Havana from the 1910s capture the city's colonial core as plainly as this narrow street with a church rising on the left. Its photomechanical print format meant the picture was reproduced for wide circulation rather than existing as a single unique photograph, which was common for travel views of the period. Old Havana, founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, was by then a dense grid of stone houses, balconies and churches, and streets like this one were often photographed to show visitors the city's Spanish heritage. The copyright notation indicates the image was registered for publication in the United States.
